Once again, Floridians disappoint. A poll conducted by St. Petersburg Times indicates that an alarming 51% of people in Florida think that creationism/intelligent design should be the only thing taught in the classroom. Another 18% think that both creationism and evolution should be taught in class. Only 22% of people in Florida think that Evolution only should be taught in science classes.
This is a scary result, people. Florida is currently in a transitional state. Next tuesday, its state board will vote on whether or not to adopt some changes to their science curriculum which will place evolution as a central part of biology. Seeing as it is a central concept in biology, this would certainly be a positive change. As the great biologist Theodosius Dobzhansky once said, "Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution."
The results of the survey are shown here:

So how are the hearings in Florida going? I think the following video summarizes it all:
Now I'm sure this guy thought his rhetoric was cute, but it was nothing more than rhetoric. All this really shows is how pathetically out of touch some Floridians are with modern science. I think this video more than anything else is evidence that Florida should make evolution a larger part of their science curriculum. Florida, do you really want to condemn your youth to doltish ramblings that mimic this guy's? I certainly hope not. Please, please, for the love of all that is holy; quickly, quietly, up your education standards.

Holy crap, that guy is bonkers, waacko, bat crap carzy.
oh my god -- everyone think's he's clever
Looks like Creation Science Evangelism has left their mark in their home state. Anybody who diligently and critically examines the evidence on each side (not just the evidence your side gives against the other) will be unable to deny a special creation by a benevolent and perfect creator. A gain of information has never been observed to happen on it's own as a result of chance.
Re. your poll at the top of the page, I'm sorry, but it's way too simplistic. I marked down I am a Christian. I am. But I also believe in evolution, pro-choice, the environment must be protected, and Creationism might be talked about in a philosophy class, but shouldn't even be in the same building, nevermind classroom, as evolution.
And the bit about changing my vote after I have voted? What's that about??
Kim,
The poll is just meant to determine what religion, if any, my readers profess. The option to change your vote is there in case someone happens to click on the wrong option.
Two questions for this fellow:
1. What is the basic building block of that orange?
2. What is the basic building block of your dog?
Right! DNA. Which means that Darwin was correct, they are related.
But only a moron with no concept of the geologic time frame within which evolution operates would think that an orange and a dog are cousins.
Wow, he really shames us all. I'm embarrassed to say I'm in the same phylum with him.
Hey thanks for the great blog, I love this stuff. I don’t usually read much into politics but with the election coming up (not to mention the dem primaries) and everyone going green these days I thought I would leave a comment.
I am trying to find more about the government and if they are going to ratify the Kyoto Protocol any time soon. Has anyone seen this poll on EarthLab.com http://www.earthlab.com/life.aspx . It said 75% of people think the government should ratify the Kyoto Protocol on Earth Day (when I took it). I also saw something on Wikipedia but it wasn’t up to date. Any other thoughts on where the government is going with this?
I am looking for more info on what candidates’ opinions are how are we are going to get closer to solutions. Drop a link of you see anything worth my time.
